If I ask them in an interview, 'How are you going to shower a resident? Or enter a resident's room?' They will give you a perfect answer. They will knock the door. They will give you the process. They will tick all the boxes.

But how they communicate with the resident and how they're going to present themselves. How they will respond to the resident's choice is very important. That's all come from their attitude and whether that comes naturally to them. That's what I look for in an interview.

- Kul Prasad Bhandari, Facility Manager at St Vincent's Care Bardon

Reasons Personal Care Assistants Work at St Vincent's Aged Care

Secure pay and reliable rostering

  • Set rosters (rather than rotating rosters) so you know what hours to expect week after week
  • More opportunities for shifts (if you want them) on top of your regular hours
  • Reliable and consistent shifts whether you're on a shift during the day or night
  • Flexibility of hours to balance life outside of work

Because resident numbers are consistently high at St Vincent's, shifts are rarely (if ever) cut or changed.

Like minded staff that care about their role

  • Aged care workers that see residents as an extension of their own family
  • Dependable people with a big heart for helping those in need
  • Celebraters of each other's cultures and special days (from Holi to Eid to Christmas and everything in between)
  • Growing in their career and wanting to get better at the work they do every day
  • Honest and hardworking (even when no one is looking)
  • Living with aged care residents (and their families) through the good times and the bad

Because, while you can train someone to be a Personal Care Assistant, you can't train a passion and a love for the role.

One of our residents is in hospital at the moment and her daughter came in to pick up some clothes.

And her mother said to her, 'I can't wait to get home. ' And she [her mother] was talking about coming back here and then her daughter started crying. She said, 'I can't tell you how much that means to me that mum feels that this is her home.'

It's so heartfelt and so there's so much gratitude and such a beautiful relationship that's been formed.

More take home pay with salary packaging

As a not for profit, St Vincent's is able to offer salary sacrifice, which means a portion of your income can be tax free.

A Personal Care Assistant earning $55k a year could save over $3145 a year in tax on salary packaging.

That would mean you would need to be making over $61k in another role to take home the same amount.
