How to choose the right home care provider
How to choose the right home care provider
Once you have made that important step of deciding you (or your family member) needs some extra help to remain in the comfort of your own home, it’s time to choose the right home care provider.
Step 1 – Get a clear view of what you need help with
With a family member or carer, go through your day/week and note down all the activities you undertake and where you may need some additional help.
Make a list of support and services you would like to receive and compare this to what is offered by each home care provider.
Step 2 – Ask for recommendations
Take some time to choose a home care provider that delivers what is important to you. Ask friends and neighbours for recommendations. Cross reference any services they are happy with against the list of accredited home care providers at My Aged Care.
Step 3 - Consider each potential provider
- Do their values align with your own?
- Would you prefer to work with a not-for-profit community provider, like St Vincent’s, or a profit-based business?
- Are the services you need available in your area?
- Where and when are home care services provided?
- Will all services be provided at home or will some require a visit to a clinic or community centre?
- What checks are in place to ensure quality service is being provided?
- Who will be providing the services - a nurse or occupational therapist?
- Will my services be provided by the same person each time?
- How are any concerns or complaints handled?
Step 4 – Think about budget
Think about the costs and fees involved in the home care you require. Even with government assistance, there still may be fees you will be charged. The main fees typically include:
- Care or case management fees
- Administration or package management fees
- Hourly fees to specific services
- Travel rates
